The Passat BlueMotion Debut at the 77th Geneva Motor Show by Benjamin Hudson
Volkswagen will present at the 77th Geneva Motor Show one of its most economical mid-class cars of all time–the Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion.
The Passat BlueMotion is powered by a TDI engine rated at 77 kW/105 PS with a remarkable fuel economy consuming only approximately 5.5 liters for both its class of sedan and Variant. The Passat BlueMotion is also scheduled to debut in Europe specifically in Berlin unfortunately VW CEO Winterkorn has scrapped its scheduled preview.
Features of the Passat BlueMotion:
* CO2 emissions reduced – the Passat boasts of its CO2 emission of 15g/km for the sedan and 19 g/km for the Variant. The total emissions of 136 g/km and 137 g/km for the Variant are proofs of the pioneering potential of the Volkswagen TDI engines. There is also the addition of a particulate filter which is integrated in the emissions control systems which are offered as standard equipment.
* The additional 5 km/h top speed – who would ever think that fuel economy plus CO2, will result to additional 5 km/h speed? The aerodynamic refinements and longer gearing have increased its top speed. The sedan tops out at 193 km/h while the Variant reaches 190 km/h.
* Passat BlueMotion is very economical – the Passat BlueMotion is not only environmentally friendly but also very economical. At an average annual driving distance of 15,000 km, the fuel cost consumed per month is only 68 Euros which is the result of car’s outstanding fuel economy. Both the sedan and the Variant possess theoretical ranges of about 1,350 on a single tank of fuel which translates to approximately eleven fill ups per year at 15,000 km.
* Passat’s Aerodynamic – the remarkable fuel economy and emission values obtained by the Passat BlueMotion is made possible through the continuous fine tuning of the drivetrain, car body, and chassis. In terms of aerodynamics the radiator grille trim was altered while the underbody was skirted. The modifications done on the Passat have boosted its air resistance values by 12.2 percent for the sedan while 0.617 and 0.629 for the Variant.
* Lower chassis optimizes air resistance – couple of modifications has been done to the chassis and if you are to carefully examine the Passat BlueMotion you will notice that its wheel housings are somewhat lower than the base version. The rationale behind the design is to improve its aerodynamics. The Passat is lowered by 15 millimeters in the front and eight millimeters in the rear. The high-tech tires sized 205/55 R16 91H that it possessed provide the lowest possible rolling resistance. The tire pressure was also increased by 0.4 bar in part-load operation.
* Innovative engine guide drivers in gear selection – the 1.9 TDI of the Passat BlueMotion revs up a maximum torque of 250Nm at 1,900 rpm. It achieves fuel efficiency by tuning a wide variety of parameters on the four-cylinder, direct-injection Turbo diesel engine. An alteration was also done to the software of the engine controller which enables engineers to lower idling speed, for instance. Likewise, the TDI’s engine control also provides a gear recommendation to the Multifunctional Display Plus guiding the driver on which gear to choose at any given time.
BlueMotion Not Just a Vehicle Name
It was in the summer of 2006 when Volkswagen–Europe’s largest automaker and producer of VW brake hoses — presented its first model under the new BlueMotion label—the Polo BlueMotion. It produces 59 kW/80 PS and has a fuel consumption of 3.9 liters diesel per 100 kilometers. Its CO2 emission is also low at 102 g/km. the BlueMotion does not only refer to the automobile but applies to the entire Volkswagen brand. The “Blue” stands for Volkswagen’s corporate color and for elements such as water and air while the “Motion” embodies forward-looking mobility directed toward the future. The BlueMotion is evolving to become a quality seal that will embody economy plus fun driving.
